The Joy-Con 2 sticks are contact based, the same basic design that caused drift on the original Switch. Nintendo has confirmed they are not hall effect sticks. A wiper rubs against a resistive track every time you move the stick, the track wears down, and the console starts reading movement while your thumb is off the stick. We replace the whole stick module. There is no soldering, the stick lands on the board through a ribbon connector, though the shell is held by hidden screws under a glued strip and takes patience to open properly. Every repair is calibrated and tested on console at our Perth bench before it goes back.
There are two options and both are priced per controller, since most people only have one bad side. A like for like replacement fits the same contact based module Nintendo used, so the stick feels new again and can eventually wear the same way. A TMR upgrade uses magnetic sensing instead, so nothing physically rubs and the wear that causes drift is taken out of the equation. TMR modules for this controller are new to the market, so we will not tell you a stick can never drift again, only that there is no longer a contact surface to wear down. Allow around an hour on the bench for each Joy-Con.
If your Switch 2 is still inside its 12 month Nintendo warranty, contact Nintendo first, opening the controller ends that cover. We are here for out of warranty units, or when you want a faster turnaround or the TMR upgrade.
What is covered: the replacement stick module and labour, backed by our 30-day warranty.
Not covered: water or physical damage, and faults unrelated to the repair we performed.
