5 Signs Your Console Needs a Clean (PS5, Xbox & Switch)
General · 9 June 2025 · 3 min read
Consoles are basically small computers, and just like a PC they fill up with dust over time. Most people never clean them — until something goes wrong. Here are five signs your PS5, Xbox or Switch is overdue for an internal clean.
1. The fan is loud
A console that suddenly sounds like a hairdryer is working overtime to stay cool because dust is choking the airflow. Loud fan noise is the earliest and most obvious warning sign.
2. Random shutdowns
If your console powers itself off mid-game — especially during demanding titles — it is almost certainly overheating and shutting down to protect itself. Ignore this and you risk permanent damage.
3. Hot exhaust air
A bit of warm air is normal. Air that is genuinely hot pouring out the back means heat is not escaping efficiently — usually because dust and old thermal paste are trapping it inside.
4. Visible dust
If you can see dust packed into the vents from the outside, there is far more inside on the heatsink where it does the real damage.
5. Performance issues
Stuttering, frame drops or slow loading can be the console throttling itself to manage heat. A clean often brings back smooth performance.
How often should you clean a console?
As a rough guide, every 1 to 2 years — sooner if you have pets, smokers in the house, or keep it in a dusty or enclosed spot. A professional clean includes fresh thermal paste, which the DIY blow-out approach cannot do.
