Hall-Effect Thumbsticks Explained — The Permanent Drift Fix

Controllers · 2 June 2025 · 4 min read

If you have ever dealt with stick drift, you have probably heard about hall-effect sticks as the permanent fix. Here is what they actually are and why they work.

Why normal sticks drift

Standard thumbsticks use a potentiometer — a tiny physical contact that scrapes across a track as you move the stick. Over time that contact wears down and starts sending a signal even when the stick is centred. That is drift, and because it is physical wear, it cannot be permanently fixed by cleaning or recalibrating.

How hall-effect sticks are different

Hall-effect sticks measure movement with magnets and a sensor instead of a physical contact. Nothing touches and nothing wears out, so they simply do not develop drift. They are also smooth and precise, which is why competitive players love them.

Which controllers can be upgraded?

  • Nintendo Switch Joy-Con and Pro Controller
  • PS5 DualSense
  • Xbox controllers, including the Elite

Is it worth it?

If you are already fixing a drifting controller, upgrading to hall-effect for a little more is well worth it — you are very unlikely to deal with drift on that controller again. It is the closest thing to a permanent fix there is.
