Spilled a Drink on Your Console or Controller? Do This Now

General · 7 July 2026 · 4 min read

A knocked-over drink next to a console or controller is a heart-stopping moment, but liquid damage is often survivable — if you act fast and avoid the popular mistakes. Here is the playbook.

Do these immediately

  • Power it off and unplug it right away — electricity flowing through wet circuits is what does the killing
  • Take the battery out if you can (controllers) or unplug from the wall (consoles)
  • Tip it so the liquid drains away from where it went in, and dab up what you can reach
  • Leave it off. Completely. No "quick test" to see if it still works

Never do these

  • Do not put it in rice — rice barely absorbs anything and leaves starch dust in the electronics
  • Do not use a hair dryer — heat pushes liquid deeper and can warp plastics
  • Do not charge it or turn it on to check — this is the single most common way spills become write-offs
  • Do not shake it — that spreads the liquid to parts it had not reached

Why it can die days later

Even if everything seems fine, sugary drinks and even plain water leave residue that corrodes circuit boards over days and weeks. A controller that survived the spill can start ghost-pressing buttons a fortnight later. The only real fix is opening the device, cleaning the boards properly with electronics-grade solution, and checking for corrosion before it spreads.
