Nintendo Switch Not Charging? Causes & Fixes (Perth)
Nintendo · 7 July 2026 · 4 min read
A Nintendo Switch that will not charge is one of the most common faults we see in Perth — and one of the most misdiagnosed. The good news: a dead-looking Switch is very rarely actually dead. Here is how to tell what is going on.
First: rule out a deep-drained battery
If a Switch sits unused for months, the battery can drain so low that the console shows no sign of life at all when plugged in — no charging icon, no response, nothing. This looks exactly like a dead console but usually is not.
- Plug it into the official charger and leave it for a full hour before judging anything
- After an hour, hold the power button for 15 seconds, release, then press it once
- Try a different USB-C cable and wall adapter to rule out the charger itself
A deep-drained Switch can take a surprisingly long time to show its first sign of life. Patience fixes a good share of "dead" consoles.
If it still will not charge: the USB-C port
The charging port is the weak point of the Switch. It sits exposed on the bottom edge, gets plugged and unplugged constantly, and takes the full force of any knock while docked or charging. Common signs of port damage:
- The cable feels loose or only charges at certain angles
- Charging works in the dock but not with the cable, or vice versa
- You can see bent or blackened pins inside the port
- The console charges only when the cable is held under pressure
A damaged USB-C port is a board-level repair — the port is soldered to the mainboard and replacing it properly needs hot-air rework equipment. It is not a DIY job, but it is a routine one for us, and far cheaper than replacing the console.
Other causes worth knowing about
- A worn-out battery that no longer holds charge — replaceable
- A faulty charging IC on the mainboard, often after using cheap third-party chargers
- Liquid damage corroding the charging circuit
