A cracked Nintendo Switch screen is one of the most common accidents we see — drops, bag knocks, and the dock are all usual suspects. The good news is it is very repairable.

Is it safe to keep using?

A small crack might seem harmless, but it lets dust and moisture in and can spread. If the touch screen has stopped responding, or you can see ink-like black spots spreading, stop using it — that is the display itself failing and using it makes things worse.

What is actually broken?

• Glass and digitiser — the outer touch layer (most common on a simple crack)
• LCD or OLED panel — the display underneath, if you see black blotches or dead areas

On the original and Lite models the glass and display are often separate layers. On the Switch OLED they are fused together, which changes the repair and the cost.

Can you DIY it?

Switch screen replacement is fiddly — there are ribbon cables that tear easily and the assembly is glued. It is doable for an experienced hand, but a first attempt often ends in more damage. For most people it is worth having done properly.

What does it cost?

Cost depends on your model, with OLED panels costing more than standard LCDs, and on whether only the glass or the full display needs replacing. Either way it is usually a fraction of a new Switch.
